International Car Free Day
Tuesday 19th Sep : Are you ready to participate in the International Car-Free Day ? With Claregalway always in the limelight as a traffic bottleneck, why not try for one day to try and find other means of transport. You never know, you may just be able to survive without the car !

  • Car pooling - How many cars these days have just one person in them ? With just a little effort we call could cut down on the amount of cars by sharing the journey with your neighbour or co-worker.
  • Bus - While our Public transport may not be the best, it is available and a means of getting to and from work. Check the timetable, they may suit
  • Bike and Walk - Depending on the length of your journer, this may not be the answer. But why not use it for the local trips ? Walk your children home, cycle to the shops....

Restoration of The old Forge
Tuesday 5th Sep : Claregalway Historical and Cultural Society have recently undertaken a new project. This involves the restoration of Smyth’s Old Blacksmiths Forge; they also expect to erect a replica of Michael Skerrit’s Carpentry workshop and a museum for old artefacts, photographs and an interpretative centre. When complete it will be a major attraction for the area.
This project has been made possible with the grateful cooperation of the Smyth family in Loughgeorge whose ancestors were blacksmiths and worked the forge right up until the last few years. Work will start shortly on the Forge while the other proposed works are expected to get under way next year.

The Society were successful in obtaining the following funding

• €17000 Dept of the Environment Heritage and Local Government
• €3200 M.F.G
• €700 Galway Co. Council, Heritage Section
• €550 Galway County Community Forum

Despite this grant aid there is still a big shortfall of money to pay for the restoration and the Society will shortly be seeking sponsors.
If you are interested in being a sponsor, want further information or would like to help in any way please contact any of the committee members listed below

Hunrededs pack Friary for Cemetary Monday
Friday 11th Aug : Wednesday, 9th August 2006 (Notes) : Over three hundred people gathered at the Claregalway Friary for an outdoor mass. Cemetary Mass is held annually on the August bank holiday Monday and takes place on the grounds of the 12th Century Franciscan Friary, beside both the old and the new Claregalway Cemetarys. It is a chance for everyone to once again remember the people who have passed away over the previous year and celebrate their lives as a community.
It is a fitting site as the beautiful ruins of the Friary give testament to the religious beliefs and faith of the area and its community. The mass itself was lovely and serene.
Fr.Mullin P.P. paid tribute to the great turnout and also to his helpers who erected the alter, laid out the chairs, speaker system and helped out in general. The day stayed clear and bright until after mass was all over and we look forward to next years Cemetary mass.

Gregg Behan, Irish Broadband outlines plans of bringing Wireless Broadband to Claregalway

Wireless Broadband Rollout in Claregalway
Thursday 25th May : On Thursday 18th May over 70 people attended a public meeting in the Claregalway Hotel. The meeting was introduced by Caitriona McQuillan, ( Regional Co-Ordinator - Group Broadband Scheme, West Regional Authority, Tel:091563842).
This public meeting was to highlight the great news that Irish Broadband are to introduce a Local Wireless Broadband Service to Claregalway and the surrounding areas. This rollout was made possible with funding under the Group Broadband Scheme. On the night Irish Broadband themselves made a presentation of the rollout and products.
The local transmitting base station will be located on the 30m ESB Tower in Rooaunmore, Claregalway (Close to the Roscommon Road junction near Terry Brennans). The signal will be to all 360 degrees and up to a distance of 8km from the tower. Possible speeds start at 2MB with a 24:1 contention.
This is a very positive development for the rural areas of Claregalway who still have no chance of getting broadband via a phone line (DSL). The other areas covered by this station will be Corrundulla, Knockdoe, Turloughmore, Lackagh, as well as the townlands of Cregmore, Carnmore, Rockwood, Cloon and Clogher.
It is hoped that the first people will be connected sometime in July/August.
Below are the main presentation points by Irish Broadband along with further Contact details of Mike Cooney who can provide you with the next steps to take.

Wireless Broadband on Offer
Tuesday 28th Feb : The latest update from the Claregalway Broadband Group is that Digiweb are now offering wireless broadband to some parts of the Claregalway area. Areas of Gortadooey and Lackagh have been sucessful.
The Digiweb Metro package details are as follows :
Connection Fee €112, Monthly rental €42, Connection Speed 512kb upload, download 3meg
To be eligible the site must have line of sight with the comms tower in Ballybane/Mervue so once again this will not suit everyone. The contract is minimum 6 months.
Contact 1800 28 58 28 and they will be happy to organise to send an engineer to see if your house can get it. They cannot determine suitability over the phone. If your house fails the call out will not cost anything.
The application to get Irish Broadband in the area is still moving along but the exact rollout date has not yet been agreed. Irish Broadband will be setting up a local base station and thus will be able to further extend the coverage of broadband. At the moment only those with line of sight with either the comms towers in Ballybane or Tonabrookie can receive wireless.
Of course many people are happily surfing at high speeds thanks to the broadband packages which are on offer from phone companies.

Wireless Broadband on its Way
Monday 9th Jan : Last week the Government announced that they had approved grant aid to Irish Broadband and the Claregalway Broadband Group under the Group Broadband Scheme. This means that the company will be setting up in the area to provide a wireless broadband solution for the community.
This welcome news follows on from last November when Eircom enabled the local exchange for broadband. The phone based DSL broadband is great but it cannot extend past 4km of the exchange (located in the Church carpark). Even then some houses within that range cannot get the service due to their phone line failing a suitability test. For a rural community like Claregalway this restriction has meant that alot of people still cannot get broadband to their homes and businesses. The wireless solution offered by Irish Broadband will mean that it can offer broadband to a wider area without the need for a phone line.
For those who are new to computers and the internet, broadband is basically just a fast always-on internet connection. It allows you to surf the internet at high speeds which makes it more useful, and allows you to transfer large files without difficulty. Anyone who has used a regular dial-up internet will know of the problems with using a slow connection.
Like digital TV, broadband is a service and at the moment you must pay for it. Normally there is an initial connection fee followed by a monthly charge. The charge depends on the package you choose as there are a number of different broadband options, mainly to do with speed. Outside of the monthly charge you will not receieve any extra bill for the amount of time online.
